History of Interior Design

Interior design appeared informally from the history of Egyptians and their spectacular architecture or from the Roman’s and ancient Greek frescoes and paintings. Throughout history, it has been observed the man’s constant need and desire to improve his home and environment and through this extension to our modern times, we can talk about a history of interior design.

Since the ancient Greek period, interior decoration and the aesthetic, functional and quality arrangement of homes have formed a specific discipline, even if, at first it was accessible only for the wealthy.

Aside of the fact that discoveries of our ancestor’s habits and life style of cave paintings or their religious significance, the drawings also suggest that in their primitive way, they felt the need to beautify and change the gray rock walls, bringing the first signs of art in interior decorations.

Discoveries of artifacts, tools and furniture from old China reinforces these beliefs by the fact that people were paying great attention to home decoration that demonstrated their social and material status.

The Roman architecture design of their cities and room decorations is another great pylon of interior design development. Their style was strongly influenced by the Greek culture but much more imposing and noble. The Eastern cultures, especially Oriental styles, have influenced Western design, taste and philosophies throughout history. The European modern interior design as developed since the beginning of the Middle Ages.

The main currents of interior design styles include: renaissance and baroque that were developed until the eighteenth century and neoclassicism, art nouveau and modernism, currents that belong to the ninetieth and twentieth century.

Nowadays, interior design has become an art, the art of carefully chose colors and the right accessories for turning a house into a home. Interior designers are professionals that could create the comfortable, relaxing and functional space we desire.
